Late October 2006,
while visiting the website of a music supplier
for our store, Spirit Voyage, I saw that some
of their recording artists performed concerts.
There was one in particular that I was really
attracted to, Snatam Kaur (pronounced Sun-a-tum
Core). Her music was so beautiful and serene;
her voice so clear and powerful; her spirit so
brilliant and full of light. I knew that the
kindred spirits in Winston-Salem would LOVE to
hear her music.
With more doubt than hope, I phoned, because
you never know, to see if I could schedule a
concert for Winston-Salem (had tried for other
artists – but no one ever even returned my
inquiry). But this time, the kind voice on the
other end said, “How about December 6th ?
She’ll be in Virginia on the 4th and Asheville
on the 7th. So we can squeeze you in on the
6th”. “Uh…” (One month away – on a Thursday
night, no venue, no pre-sold tickets, no
posters, no advertisements, no experience
organizing a concert…. the opportunity to bring
a world-class experience to Winston-Salem that
my kindred spirits would love)... “Wow….” (I
believe in miracles)… “Ok…” (Impossible is a
word in a fool’s dictionary) …. “Sure. Let’s do
it.”. So, December 6th it was.
Because of the late notice, they worked with us
on their minimum guaranteed sales and The
Blessings Project practically donated their
beautiful space for use as the venue.
On the evening of December 5th, the band
arrived in Winston in a well-worn Van (4 people
and ALL of their equipment scientifically
positioned within the van). My husband and I
shared a wonderful welcome dinner with them at
California Fresh Buffet. Each of the band
members was delightful and it was a great
opportunity to get to know them. The next
morning they came to my house for lunch and we
got to get to know them a bit more. I can
assure you that the beauty of their music
simply flows from their beauty within.
The evening of December 6th began with a free
vegetarian Love Feast (this is my service to
the community, whenever possible, I love to
feed people sumptuous vegetarian foods). People
just kept coming and coming. People I
recognized as being “kindred spirits” and
others whom I had not yet met. It was very
exciting. By the time the concert was to begin,
we had a FULL house of 85 people. The lights
were dimmed and the music began.
The unique sounds of a harmonium blending
sweetly with guitar and accented with tabla
rose to fill the spaces surrounding us as
Snatam Kaur’s voice penetrated directly into
our hearts by the vehicle of sacred Gurumukh
chants. Within moments we were united – no
longer separated individuals, but joined in a
synergistic way - swaying, rising and flowing
with the music. The struggles of our day washed
away. The differences between us disappeared.
The joy within us brought out. We were riding
waves beyond space and time.
The evening ended way too quickly but with
great satisfaction. People were absolutely
delighted and seemed to float back to their
lives.
Since then, Snatam and her band have become
even more appreciated throughout the world.
Being ever-increasing in demand, it looked like
they wouldn’t be able to make it to lil’ ol’
Winston this time ‘round. Their audiences have
grown to nearly a thousand (1100 in Mexico city
“It was absolutely amazing. When I first walked
out on stage I was totally overwhelmed by the
love from the audience. They clapped and
clapped and clapped and I hadn't even started
singing yet! I found that this love permeated
through our whole experience”, Snatam Kaur) and
they have traded in their beat up cramped
quarters for a 40 foot double-decker bus that
runs on bio-diesel, wrapped in brilliant green
pronouncing the message – “Peace, Light, Love –
Heal the World”. But, guess what, they ARE
coming. They were touched by the hearts of
those who attended last year’s concert, they
wanted to come again – giving us a little more
time than last year to spread the word (and
sell tickets. Good thing, because of the demand
for their music, the required guaranteed number
of sold tickets has a bit more than tripled.
They can’t be everywhere so they will agree to
come to the places that will give the most
people access to their music).
Their message and their music are direct from
the heart to the heart, transformative and
uplifting. Join us, Saturday, March 1, 7:30, at
